Columbus is getting a little Broadway magic, a lot of jazz, and a whole crew of pirates this November. Nina West will star in PIRATES! THE PENZANCE MUSICAL, a fresh take on Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic that swaps the English seaside for the lively streets of New Orleans.
The production is a collaboration between Opera Columbus and CAPA, bringing together local jazz musicians, BalletMet choreographer Hisham Omardien, and Columbus Children’s Theatre’s scenic team. It’s also part of two big milestones: the Palace Theatre’s 100th anniversary and Opera Columbus’ 45th season.
The musical follows Frederic, a young man raised by pirates who thinks he’s finally free to leave them behind on his 21st birthday. Naturally, things don’t go according to plan, especially once romance, a swaggering Pirate King, and a very confused group of policemen enter the picture.
PIRATES! THE PENZANCE MUSICAL will take over the Palace Theatre on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. Performances will be sung in English with English captions, and tickets start at $13.40. For more info, head over to capa.com.
